finally i was on ilha grande for three days. i passed it with julia and jan-simon (from the berlin capoeira group). julia knows the island well so she showed us some hikes to diffrent beaches.
ilha grande is just a bit south of rio so you can reach it by bus and ship in about 4 hours.
it’s a famous tourist place and everyone calls it the paradise
very interesting was Dois Rios. it’s a tiny village with an old prision which was closed in 1994.
all the houses there belong to the government. so now the houses are abandoned and are becoming beautiful and scary ruins. nowadays there is a research centre from the uerj (universidade do estado do rio de janeiro), so just people who are working there are living in Dois Rios (population: 50). there is one bus from the military police who brings the kids to the main village Abraão to school. this and a truck for collecting and stuff like that refuse are the only vehicles on the island.
it’s so diffrent there. you pass the lonely streets, some birds flying around, grass is high around the lonesome obelisk in the middle of the square. a ruin, and next to it a house with a young woman on the veranda smoking a sigarette. then the old prison also sorrounded with high grass, trash, fishbones left by the birds, 2 barkling dogs …
looking towards the sea you see this paradise beach with its sparkling turquese water …
